Hi Julie

I'm pleased to hear that your Mum is a little better today. But all those problems, my heart goes out to them both. These days I'm never surprised when I hear of or experience first hand the failings of the NHS. Your poor Mum with all her existing problems should have received first rate care. Falls can be such a nasty shock and take some getting over without the injuries she has sustained.

I do hope your Mum continues to make a steady recovery and your Dad is okay too. Please give them both my best wishes. Hope you are okay too Julie,

Take care

Thank you for your kind thoughts and good wishes. Mum is a bit more comfortable now, she went to the fracture clinic and had yet more x-rays yesterday. They found she had another broken metacarpal - so that's 3 breaks in both hands. She can only move 2 fingers so as you can imagine, things are not easy. Dad is having to do absolutely everything for her (even injecting her insulin) and is struggling (bless him) but would never admit it! It looks like she will be this way for quite some time and she is not a patient patient!. Jim and I have been round there since 8 this morning and I've done a bit of tidying and cooked them a joint of meat for dinner so dad just has to do some potatoes and veg later. I'm thinking of taking an extra day or so leave next week so I can help dad out.

Jim has been a little angel and there hasn't been much for him to do round at mum's all the time but he has never complained and has found ways to amuse himself. He is only 8 but seems to understand how mum is struggling. He's been a real star.

I've been luckyI've been able to help a bit as the depo is still working and I'm ok as long as I don't do too much. Its was fortunate that I was off work this week anyway. Also forgot to mention good news - 2nd chest x-rays were fine. Nurse is ordering Humira and I should get a letter from her next week (exciting but scary).

Oh gosh Julie your poor Mum and Dad (and you)-why not try something like Wiltshire frozen foods who will deliver AND put them in the freezer?
YES I'VE CHANGED, PAIN DOES THAT TO PEOPLE.

Oh your poor mum, what a terrible thing to happen when you are away from home. The treatment she received at first sounded awful, what were they thinking of? I would have thought they would have been more careful with an elderly lady already suffering from a disease.

I hope she makes a speedy recovery, it's good that you will be around to help.

HI Julie,

What an awful time for you all.
That sounds a good idea of Julie's, I've heard the Wiltshire frozen meals are very good, and it would take some pressure off you and your Dad.
You make sure you don't do too much! Your son sounds a real little treasure!

Love, Doreen xx

So sorry to hear of the ongoing problems, Julie. Thank goodness your parents have such a supportive daughter and grandson. Bless him - I think kids are very perceptive to things like this.

Lots of love

Hi Julie

I do hope things are improving a little for you mum and dad, what a difficult time for you all.

Really pleased your x-rays are fine, and now you can proceed with the Humira.

Hope you and the family manage to have a restful weekend, and enjoy the good weather while it lasts.

Julia xx

Hi Julie- just picked up on this thread today. I really feel for you all, having just gone through a difficult few months with my elderly, ailing parents. I hope that you all managed to get a restfu weekend, and that things are gradually improving for them. I assume that they (and you)are getting support from social services? I don't want to preach, or sound bossy but if not, it might be worth considering getting some home care for them.

Thinking of you all

Thanks for your messages and am about to google the Wiltshire Frozen meals thanks Julie.

Maria - my dad is officially my mum's carer but his osteoperosis in his spine has suddenly got worse and he won;t admit it RollEyes . The normally get on fine when mum can do a few more things for herself but he is washing, dressing, taking her to the toilet etc - she can't even pull her own knickers up (I know quite a few people on here have been there!) He won't admit the toll it's taking on him. My sister and I are going to spend some time with them again next week. Am worried as I am back at work from tomorrow but we will just have to see how it goes.

Meanwhile, as Jim had been so good we decided to take off for some fun. We only went to get him some new school shoes but ended up going to the cinema to watch Street Dance (cheesy but fun in a 'Fame' sort of way). Jim then decided to treat himself to the foot treatment thing where loads of little fish nibble your feet Blink . I don't know if anyone's seen it but I certainly didn't want to do it - he thought it was fabulous though and said his feet felt lovely. Strange but enjoyable day.

Hi Julie,

I've only just managed to catch up on your news.

I'm so sorry about your mum's fall but I'm pleased she's at least had it sorted and is more comfortable at home. Your dad certainly sounds like he's doing a superb job looking after her and it's great that you're helping too. It is just the most awful thing to see your own parents so vulnerable and fragile though.

Glad you had such a nice day with Jim ... I'm thinking of taking my kids to see that movie too Smile

Look after yourself x x

Hi Julie,

Would it be possible for your Mum to have carers while she is in plaster? Just temporary, it would take some of the pressure off your Dad.

I'm glad you had a good time with Jim. I haven't heard of that foot treatment with the fish.....are his toes still there?Scared

Love, Doreen xx

Went to see mum again today and was so pleased. Although she is still in pain she was more like her old self, laughing and joking. It was such a relief to see that she seems to be getting over the shock of falling so badly.

My sister and I have tentatively broached the subject of extra care to mum and dad but they are having none of it. They don't consider themselves to old or infirm enough Laugh . (They are only 69 and 70 actually.) They have however conceded on one point and have asked me to get the Wiltshire Frozen Foods menu - so thanks for that Julie M.

I'm off to bed now. I forgot to mention that to add to the frivolities yesterday, we bought a sparkly hula hoop as well. I was showing Jim how to do it and only did a little bit, thinking my knees and hips would suffer, but I have to be different and have injured my shoulder instead Blink . How do you do that with a hula hoop ????

I was practising in an effort to impress Jean and Doreen by including it in my next pole dancing routine LOL LOL .

Sparkly hula hoop- whatever next?

Seriously though- glad to hear things are a little better and that you managed to have some time to enjoy yourself.

I know what you mean about your mum and dad having none of it- my dad was the same until he got to the point where he had no choice. Even then, he put up a fight and wouldn't let any female carers undress him!! I must say though, your parents are much younger than mine and I can understand that they don't want carers.

Take care

Maria x
